Theme for the first issue

DEMOCRACY, EQUITY AND GENDER AS PATHWAYS TO SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability as an ethical principle, envisages the eternal continuity and coexistence of human and ecological communities and signifies long-term viability of communities, institutions, and social practices. Its socio-cultural, economic, and ecological dimensions have unequivocally put it on a focal point towards which all disciplines converge.

For some time now, Climate Change or Climate Crisis are terms that have entered our daily vocabulary underscoring the all-pervasive impact of environmental degradation. The unprecedented damage to the environment is driving natural systems to the brink of collapse. Although the correlation between climate change and gender might not be too obvious, research over the years has widely established that climate change exacerbates the vulnerabilities of women in numerous ways. The same may be said for other marginalised groups. The paradigm of sustainability, humanity’s only means of ensuring its survival in an uncertain future, thus co-opts the issues of gender, equity and democracy. The interface between gender, poverty, marginalisation, climate change and sustainability can no longer be overlooked.

This volume attempts to bring together perspectives and interventions on environment, gender, democracy and sustainability from the various branches of social sciences and

humanities to contribute to the ongoing discourses and affirm the multidimensionality of the concept and practice of sustainability.

The first volume of Loreto College Journal of Humanities and Social Science invites essays on the following subthemes:
